Sept. 24, 2014 – Hampton City Council voted Wednesday to defer the effective date for the changes in the tax relief program for low-income elderly and disabled homeowners who were already in the program on or before July 2013.
For those already in the program, the new effective date will be July 2016. The changes will remain in effect for all new applicants.
Hampton Council voted to adopt changes to the program during the budget discussions in the spring. The share of the city’s budget devoted to tax relief programs has been growing and will top $3 million this fiscal year. That means the city’s other homeowners are each paying on average more than $50 per year to offset the tax obligations of others.
