How are collections made when my scheduled day falls on a holiday?: If your scheduled day falls on a holiday, your garbage, bulk trash, limbs, yard waste, and tires will be collected on the Wednesday of that week. If your recycling collection is scheduled on the holiday, it will also be collected on the Wednesday of that week. The holiday collection schedule is published in the newspaper and is available to you through the 3-1-1 Customer Call Center.

1. Can I put leaves and grass in dark bags if I run out of clear ones?: No, all yard waste must be in clear bags for collection. Stock up early during leaf season to ensure that you have enough bags.

2. Can I take my leaves and grass to the Hampton yard waste site?: Hampton residents and contractors doing yard work in the city can take their yard waste to the yard waste site next to the landfill for free disposal. They accept leaves, grass, and limbs / branches that are no bigger than 5 inches in diameter and 5 feet in length. Grass and leaves must be debagged by the customer at the site.

4. How can I reach your 3-1-1 Customer Call Center?: If you are calling from the City of Hampton, simply dial 3-1-1 on your touch tone or rotary dial phone. From outside the city of Hampton, please dial (757) 727-8311. The call center is available from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.

5. How many clear bags of yard waste can I put at the curb for collection?: There is no limit to the number of bags. We ask that they do not exceed 50 pounds per bag for the safety of our collectors.

6. What is my leaf and grass collection day?: All garbage, bulk trash, limbs, yard waste, and tires are collected on the same day each week.

7. When can I put my yard waste out for collection?: Yard waste can be put curbside as early as 3 p.m. on the day before your scheduled collection day. Bags need to be curbside by 7 a.m. to insure you will receive prompt service.

8. Where can I get the clear plastic bags?: Clear bags are available at all major retail outlets in Hampton, building supply stores, and many drug and grocery stores at comparable prices to dark bags.

9. Why do I have to put my leaves and grass in clear plastic bags for collection?: Clear bags are required so that the collector can see what is inside to avoid contamination from trash.

10. Why do I need to provide space between my yard waste bags and other things out for collection?: Each item is collected by a different vehicle so the yard waste bags need to be accessible to the collector.

11. Why doesn't Hampton collect loose leaves with a vacuum truck?: Vacuum trucks are expensive to buy and maintain. Also, when leaves are in the curb or ditch during a rain storm it can cause serious flooding in neighborhoods.
