1. How do I schedule an inspection now that I have my permit?

Contact the 3-1-1 Call Center between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. When calling from within the Hampton city limits, dial 3-1-1. When calling from outside of Hampton, you must dial (757) 727-8311.

2. When is an inspection required?

If work being done requires a permit, an inspection is usually required. The Codes Compliance Department is responsible for those inspections. They can be reached at (757) 727-8311.

3. Can I submit an inspection request through email?

Unfortunately, at this time we cannot take inspection requests through email. Please contact the 3-1-1 Call Center directly at 311 or (757) 727-8311.

4. What is the maximum grass/weed height allowed?

It shall be unlawful for the owner of any land, or any occupant or other person who is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of any land, occupied or vacant including the area adjoining such property extending to the curb line or the paved portion of the roadway and or the center line of an abutting alley, to permit grass, weeds and other foreign growth on such property to exceed a height of eight (8) inches, within one hundred fifty (150) feet of any residential or commercial structure, or any structure designed for use in connection therewith.

5. Once the grass is cut at a property, does a letter have to be sent each time the grass gets high?

No. Effective summer 2002, the city doesn't have to send a letter each time the grass is high. Letters are only sent once, at the beginning of the growing season each year.
