The Charles H. Taylor Visual Arts Center is the visual arts center for the City of Hampton, offering free admission to its schedule of changing visual art exhibitions as well as a quarterly schedule of classes, workshops and educational programs. There is a fee for the classes, workshops and some programs.
What types of exhibitions do you present at the arts center?
The arts center presents seven changing exhibitions each year, each on display about six to seven weeks. Most of these feature the artwork of artists living and working here in the seven city Hampton Roads region. At the beginning of the year, The Hampton Arts League Open Members Exhibition affords each of its 300+ members the opportunity to exhibit one of their works. In the spring, we present the Artists Who Teach Juried Exhibition, displaying artwork by artists who teach art in elementary through high school and adults on the peninsula and at the college level in Hampton Roads. In late summer, we host the Virginia Artists Juried Exhibition, a competition featuring artwork in all media by some of the best artists and craftsmen from across Virginia. The remaining exhibitions are invitational exhibitions focusing on diverse themes, media and content which are curated by the arts center.
As an artist, how can I exhibit my work at the arts center?
Hampton Arts League members can each exhibit one artwork in our annual Hampton Arts League Members Exhibition. Artists are invited to become a part of our artist database by sending their contact information, resume, media and three digital images of their artwork as 300 dpi jpg attachments about 1-3 MB. Most of our invitational exhibitions are selected from this database.
What is the Hampton Arts League?
The Hampton Arts League is a membership organization of artists, offering a newsletter, monthly meetings with a program, such as a demonstration or gallery talk of interest to artists, discounts for classes and other programs, and our Tuesday Morning Painters group. Artists may join by completing the membership form and paying a modest annual fee. Contact the arts center to receive the membership form.
What types of classes do you offer?
Adult classes offered include drawing, painting, watercolor, photography and other visual arts. Fees vary depending on the length of the class. Adult students provide their own materials for most of their classes. Call the arts center at 727-1490 to receive a schedule via email or a hard copy via regular mail.
What other types of programs are offered by the arts center?
There are opening receptions for our exhibitions, monthly HAL meetings, semi-annual Plein Air Painting Events, gallery talks, and other special events.
