2019 Commemorative Commission

  1. Spheres of Migration 1619-2019 Discussion

    March 19, 2019, 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM @ Hampton University Museum

    A panel discussion on Tuesday, March 19, will consider the historic migratory patterns of African-Americans in Hampton, to include the forced migration of Africans resulting from the Transatlantic Slave Trade, and factors such as the Contraband Decision, the Aberdeen Gardens Resettlement Community and the military. Spheres of Migration 1619-2019 is presented by the Hampton Roads Branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History and the Hampton 2019 Commemorative Commission. Citizens Unity Commission

  1. Book discussion: 'Citizen: An American Lyric'

    March 20, 2019, 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM @ Phoebus Branch Library

    Join a community book discussion about "Citizen: An American Lyric" by Claudia Rankine. This powerful written work covers topics such as race and identity through vignettes, short stories, essays, poetry, and artwork. Up to 25 residents can register and pick up a free copy of "Citizen" at the resource center on the second floor of the main library, 4207 Victoria Blvd. Call 311, or 757-727-8311, to register to attend. Ages 13 and up are welcome. The Hampton Library and Citizens' Unity Commission want residents to come together for a series of book discussions that will end with a "reading block party" on March 23. It's all part of One City One Book, a unique reading program designed to promote literacy and build a sense of community.   3. Living Life and Losing Labels

    Middle and high school students are invited to help reduce social biases, labels, and stereotypes when it comes to gender and sexual orientation by joining a community discussion on Saturday, March 30. The goal is to build an alliance between gay and straight students that will encourage inclusion — not division — and reduce fear, bullying and high-risk behavior. The discussion is sponsored by Hampton's Citizens' Unity Commission and the LGBTQ Awareness Committee. In addition to the open discussion, there will be free food and music.
